Avatar: The Illuminated World of Pandora

THANK YOU so much to everyone who has voted so far. While you’ve all been voting, I’ve slowly been making some tweaks to the original design to add several improvements and also lower the brick count even more. :) 

Now that we’ve reached 5,000 votes, it’s time to reveal a NEW minifigure I’m really hoping to include in this set — Dr. Grace Augustine, played by the extraordinary Sigourney Weaver! 

Did you know that Sigourney’s likeness has been captured as a LEGO minifig before? A figure based on her Dana Barrett role was released with the Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters set (75827). Here’s hoping we can get a second minifig made of one of my favorite actresses.

While most of the visual effects shots on James Cameron's Avatar were done by Peter Jackson's Weta Digital, George Lucas' Industrial Lights & Magic was also brought in to complete the CGI work in the film. With a collaboration this big, it's no wonder the visual effects looked amazing!

According to James Cameron, the design of the floating mountains in Avatar is inspired by the mountains around Southern China, in particular, Zhangjiajie (张家界). With the success of the film, one of China’s national park mountains has been renamed “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” (阿凡达-哈利路亚山).

Unlike most of the animals in this set, today’s featured creature made its debut appearance in the Cirque du Soleil Avatar production “Toruk: The First Flight.” Say hello to the Austrapede!

James Cameron was convinced that CGI effects had progressed enough to the point that he could realize his vision for Avatar only after he saw the photorealistic work done on King Kong (2005), Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean (2006), and Gollum from Lord of the Rings (2002).

James Cameron’s “Avatar” previously held the record for the highest grossing film, with a worldwide gross of $2.790 billion. In 2019, that record was surpassed when “Avengers: Endgame” was re-released in theaters, with a worldwide gross of $2.797 billion. To congratulate Marvel, Cameron tweeted an image of Iron Man surrounded by Pandoran woodsprites.

To date, Avatar still holds several box office records, including highest-grossing non-sequel, highest-grossing 3D film, and highest-grossing IMAX film.
