Donald Campbell, CBE, won acclaim for holding both the land and water speed world records in the same year - the only man to have done so. This LEGO Idea puts him in the cockpit of his iconic Bluebird K7 jet powered hyrdoplane that he used on Coniston Water in the English Lake District on many occasions. The Bluebird reached speeds in excess of 300 mph over 50 years ago as it promoted British engineering and heroism around the world.
I visited the Lake District a lot as a child and got married there - part of my wedding reception was actually held on Coniston Water (at a tiny fraction of Bluebird's speed!). So whilst I've always known about Bluebird, I couldn't tell you exactly what brought it to mind as an Idea, it just popped into my head one night. I think that many LEGO sets focus on heroes, so why not celebrate a very British hero?
This set comes in at around 300 pieces and can accommodate a minifigure of Campbell. I think it will appeal to a younger generation who have never heard of Bluebird because, well, who doesn't love a jet boat?! If you are interested in learning more about Bluebird and the current restoration project (which I'm not involved with) please have a look at this site:
