On October 15, 1997, Thrust SSC reached a speed of 763 miles per hour (1,228 kilometers per hour), becoming the first land vehicle to break the sound barrier.
Powered by two Rolls Royce Spey jet engines, Wing Commander Andy Green OBE set the record on Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
The thermal power released by burning 18 litres/second of aviation fuel is approximately 630 MW which means the vehicle was operating at around 12% efficiency at its record speed!
