History
As one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu is without a doubt the most famous Incan city. That is until someone finds El Dorado. Built around 1420 the city would be inhabited until the Spanish conquest in 1532 of the area. The inhabitants probably all died because of the diseases the Spanish brought with them. After centuries, Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham and in 1983 UNESCO declared Machu Picchu as a World Heritage Site.
Features
starting with the most major element of the model, the city, it includes a few important landmarks:
- temple of sun
- temple of the three windows
- temple of the condor
- the sacred stone
- intihuatana
- the cinchona tree
- some more
When making a city at this scale, it is hard to capture the true magnificence and layout of the city. I tried to be as accurate with including some notable buildings and places, but had to make some sacrifices to make it look like the city was somewhat in scale with the mountains I constructed. That is why the city itself is not to scale with the mountains, I heard it is a little smaller, although I have never been. Discussing mountain, the model includes:
- Machu Picchu
- Huayna Picchu
- Huchuy Picchu
Landmarks relevant to these mountains:
- temple of the moon
- Urubamba river
- Road
Pieces and Dimensions
The model has 1780 pieces and measures 40.0 x 20.0 x 19.2 centimeters, (12.6 x 8.8 x 6.0 inches). Instructions are still under construction.
Motivation and Experience
Since a few years, history has really peaked my interest and Machu Picchu had always captured my imagination. Maybe it is legendary position of the city, because in the Netherlands those are non existent, it is definitely a factor to its fame. It was a logical choice to make Machu Picchu as my first big Lego project and I do not regret it one bit. I have had an utmost memorable and fun experience creating this model. For me, the hardest part of the model was create a balance between the sky-high mountains and the city itself. on flat ground the city loses one its most majestic qualities. That is exactly what I wanted to capture. From measuring the dimensions of the mountains on google earth with a ruler, to shaping a city with all its beauty and grandeur. special thanks to Diego Baco for their inspiring model, it has been a huge influence.
I hope to visit Peru and the Incan city in the future but for now it is on my list as number one. Machu Picchu is the perfect landmark to learn, build and explore the Incan civilization. A true masterpiece. Let me know what you think about the design in the comments, and you can contact me through my socials. I hope you have enjoyed my testimony to the ancient Inca's and I thank every one of you for supporting this lego ideas submission. Yusulpayki!
