Steam Locomotive "Rasender Roland"

This set pays tribute to one of Germany’s oldest and most iconic narrow-gauge railways, which has been running on the island of Rügen since 1895. The “Rasender Roland” connects the island’s picturesque seaside resorts, quaint villages, and lush forests, offering passengers a unique and nostalgic travel experience. With this project, I aim to capture the magic of this historic steam-powered railway and bring its charm to life through LEGO.

The “Rasender Roland” has always held a special place in my heart. As a child, I vividly remember my first journey on this railway—the distinctive whistle of the steam engine, the slow yet captivating ride through Rügen’s beautiful landscapes, and the feeling of stepping back in time. These cherished memories inspired me to recreate the train as a LEGO model that captures its historical significance and unique character.

My goal was to design a set that goes beyond just being a train. I wanted to highlight the authenticity and intricate details of the “Rasender Roland,” such as its unique narrow-gauge track width of only 750 mm. To achieve this, I created custom-designed narrow tracks, as the standard LEGO tracks were too wide to match the real train’s proportions.

The “Rasender Roland” is a technical marvel and a living piece of history that continues to delight visitors on the island of Rügen. This set is a faithful recreation of the historic steam locomotive “99 1782-4” and its accompanying passenger cars. Every detail has been carefully crafted to ensure an accurate and nostalgic representation of this iconic train.
