This LEGO model depicts the finale of 1981's Clash of the Titans. Perseus, the son of Zeus, must save Princess Andromeda from the clutches of the titanic Kraken. With only thirty days to save her, he must battle the monstrous Calibos, question the sinister Stygian Witches, and face the ferryman Charon in his journey to confront the Gorgon Medusa. Perseus plans to make use of her petrifying gaze to defeat the colossal sea monster. He swoops in astride the winged stallion Pegasus, ready to save the day, and fulfil his destiny.
Included in this set is a brick-built and fully posable Kraken and Pegasus. The original movie was the last work of the great stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen, so I wanted to honor that by making sure as many sections of this set could be positioned in as many ways as possible. Adding many joints and hinges will allow the builders can display this set however they wish. Each of the Kraken's arms has seven points of articulation, providing many potential orientations! Pegasus also has several joints throughout his body, letting you select from a multitude of custom poses! The head of the Kraken was very difficult to design, since it has a very distinct beak shape which I have attempted to capture with the use of tile pieces. The arms took the longest to figure out, since I wanted them to look very fluid and without obvious seam lines.
Adjacent to the main build is Medusa's Lair, where she lurks inside a ruined building; waiting for those unlucky enough to meet her brilliant green eyes. This version of her is iconic, as the original myth does not depict her with the body of a snake, but it has become part of the public perception. Behind her are a simple attempt at Corinthian style columns, which were fun to build in as few pieces as possible.
Behind the main build can be found numerous smaller dioramas, intended to be reminiscent of carved reliefs found in Ancient Greek architecture. Included are depictions of the Ampitheatre of Ammon, the cave of the Witches, Charon the ferryman, and a statue of Calibos surrounded by his vulture and the scorpions he unleashes. I really love doing miniature builds like these!
The characters included are Perseus, Princess Andromeda, Medusa, and statues of Calibos and Charon. Also included are scorpions, micro figures for the Witches, Calibos' Vulture, and Bubo the Owl! The builder can also pick the quote to display, using either line from Zeus. In the bottom left-hand corner are the four gifts given to Perseus during the course of the movie, the Helmet of Invisibility, his shield, his sword, and Bubo! The shield in the movie featured an Eagle, but I wished to honor the original myth, where Athena used her frightening facial features as the design of her new shield. A similar pattern is used for the eight surrounding decoration tiles on the base.
I hope you like this build and thank you if you've read this far. I think that Clash of the Titans would be a fantastic addition to the line of display sets that LEGO has made depicting iconic scenes from movies like Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. A fun film fact if you've made it this far, did you know that Clash of the Titans came out on the same day as Raiders of the Lost Ark?
