Classical Greek Column

In Ancient Greece, one of the most fundamational aspects of architecture is the column. This comes in the form of the Greek Classical Orders where over time the proportions and designs evolved as technological advancements were made. The columns became thinner and more ornate over time. Doric became Ionic, then Corinthian, and eventually Composite.

In my model, I choose to depict the Composite style of column where elements of the previous Orders were merged together into one very intricate design. As opposed to an entire temple, I decided to highlight a single column to be able to fully demonstrate the true scale and grandeur of these iconic pieces of architectural design. Shown in minifigure scale, this display model is about 24 inches tall. Included are two minifigures, the Greek Scholar and Greek Soldier.

Having a degree in architecture, it's amazing to see how much the Ancient Greek columns have had an impact on the development of architecture around the world, particularly in Europe and the United States. With this model, I hope to be able to bring some of that history and elegance into the home. It would make for an cool and sizeable display model to adorn the top of shelves.

The background photo was shot by me on my trip to the Acropolis in Athens.
