This little man is famous among seamen and sailors - it is the famous "Klabautermann" or also called Ship's Kobold.
As a Ship's Kobold he is a merry and diligent water creature who assists sailors and fishermen on the oceans with their duties. He can for example rescue sailors washed overboard. His name comes from the low German verb klabastern meaning "rumble" or "make a noise".
Despite the positive attributes, there is one major secret associated with his presence: no member of a ship blessed by his presence shall ever set eyes on him. He only ever becomes visible to the crew of a doomed ship...
