The big 5-0-0!

Woo hoo! After yesterday's piece in the Inner West Courier, we managed to hit the 500 vote mark. Aiden & I & our life-size SunSmart Lego beachgoer below want to pass on our thanks again for your support & your patience in dealing with the gremlins in the Lego Ideas login process. Only 9,500 to go, so please keep sharing! Aussie Aussie Aussie!

Out of hospital & back online

Just a quick post to let y’all know that I’m now out of hospital, sans one walnut-sized tumor, and recovering well.  Unfortunately though, I’ve (temporarily) lost the control over my left hand because of where the tutor was located.  That’s going to make Lego building a challenge in the short term, but it will take more than that to stop me from Bricking On.

I want to thank everyone who has contacted me over the past couple of weeks and passed on their support and love.  It makes this difficult time just that little less difficult and I can’t thank you enough.

I also want to send a particular thank you to my employer King & Wood Mallesons and Katrina Rathie who have been the most supportive & understanding employers you could ever wish to have.  Katrina sent me a signed copy of a new book from one of the most inspiring Australians ever, NSW Australian of the Year, Deng Adut.  I can’t express how much this and his message means to me.

This week I’ll be working on getting some press for Lego Surf Rescue, in between radiation & drug therapy, so keep an eye out for updates in the coming days/weeks.

A reminder of how important & personal this campaign is

Just a heads up to everyone following our project – I’m gonna be in and out of social media contact over the next week or so.  Unfortunately my doctors found a few new melanoma spots on my lungs and my brain last week.  So, I’ll be heading in for a bit of neurosurgery this Friday, followed by radiation, and some of the very promising drug therapy we keep hearing about.

I’ll keep you all up-to-date on my progress over the coming weeks/months (here on Lego Ideas, as well as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest, & LinkedIn).  In the meantime please keep spreading the word about our project.  I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who have suggestions on how to promote the project, particularly within the AFOL community, which I am very new to.

As a small thank you here are a couple of pics of Aiden & I playing with our SunSmart Lego set!  Brick on & I’ll be in touch again very soon with more updates!

Cheers,

Damien MacRae

Meet Bob, our Lego Surf Rescue team leader

Exciting news from the Lego Surf Rescue universe.  We received delivery of our sunscreen-wearing “Bob” mini figure this week from the fantastic guys at minifigs.me!  (I can’t recommend those guys highly enough!)

Bob is Team Surf Rescue’s fearless leader and he had his first photo shoot in his full regalia today.  Check him out below on the quad bike, the inflatable boat, a surf ski, and keeping watch from the patrol tower and on the beach with Keats.

Bob is named after reggae legend Bob Marley, who you may not know died after a four year battle with a melanoma skin cancer that started on his toe.  Bob Marley, along with Diane Keaton, Hugh Jackman & Nicole Kidman, are all personal inspirations of mine while I battle this disease, which is why I’ve named our mini figures after them.

If you’d like to be able to have Bob & the rest of the gang patrolling the Lego city beach, please share this page with all your friends and family!

Brick on!

We’ve passed the 200 mark!

200 down, only 9,800 to go!  Sure it sounds like a lot, but I’m certain we can do it.  There’s gotta be at least 10,000 Aussies who’d like to see a dinky-di Aussie set, let alone one that is teaching the world to be SunSmart!  Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi, Oi, Oi!

A big thank you again to everyone who has taken the time to vote, follow and/or comment, especially those of you who had to register for the first time (it’s a pain I know!).

In celebration of reaching 200, here’s a little pop art for your screens (a little something I cooked up on my iPhone while waiting around in the hospital over the weekend thanks).

Best wishes,

Damien MacRae & Aiden Francis

We’ve passed out first milestone!

Woo hoo!  Aiden & I were elated to find out today that Lego Surf Rescue had passed the 100 supporters mark in less than a week.

A big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to vote, follow & comment, especially those of you who had to register for the first time.

In celebration of reaching this first milestone, here’s a pic of Surf Rescuer “Nic” on her surf ski!  Keep rockin' those shades Nic!

Everyone around the world is at risk of developing skin cancer, especially in my neck of the woods, Australia.  According to the Cancer Council approximately 2 in every 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70(!!!).  Simple sun safety measures like wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and hats can reduce your risk.  We need to spread that message!  So if you get the time this weekend, please share this campaign with your family & friends.

Next target: 500 supporters!

Best wishes,

Damien MacRae & Aiden Francis
