Final update

It was another good run for Lego Niagara Falls, but once again the project stalled out in the mid-hundreds for supporters. But stay tuned! I have a new and improved version of Lego Niagara Falls that may show up on Lego Ideas in future. Will the third time be a charm? Until then, brick on! - Pretzel Brick

Update 4 - Just shy of 500 votes

So here I am, less than 2 months left and just shy of 500 votes. I sincerely appreciate the steady stream of new supporters that are finding my project every day. However, social media seems to be beyond my grasp and I may be in the final days of what is currently my last active project.

But all is not lost! I'm reinventing myself on Lego Ideas as Pretzel Brick (I'm the AFOL formerly known as Pretzel829) and I've launched a new Facebook page called "LEGO Earth". LEGO Earth, as my description states, is all about Mother Nature. If you have an MOC where the landscape is the star of the show, or if you have questions or advice about Lego designs that focus on the natural world, come and find my group!

I may start a blog too, if I can think of a clever name. LEGO Earth has a nice ring to it. So while the future is uncertain at this moment, I'm looking forward to whatever it may bring.

Brick on,

Pretzel Brick

Update 1 - Behind the Falls

First off, welcome to all my new supporters, as "Niagara Falls" was picked as one of the "Editor's Top 5 Projects Under 100 Supporters" in the Lego Ideas weekly digest today. So Yee-ha! to that!

One supporter, jkellerps, asked about how the Horseshoe Falls was built. So I rendered a few color-coded images tonight to show how that was done. It's pretty simple, actually, although it took some time to figure out the correct angles and brick sizes in LDD to make the grille parts form a natural curve.

The main support comes from the rear and the sides with the "Brickheadz" style 1x2x1 w/ 4 knobs bricks (YELLOW). The angled sections are connected horizontally with 1x2 hinge plates (RED), with plates behind the hinges to hold all that together. On top of the hinges are standard 2x3, 2x4, and 2x8 bricks (GREEN), and on top of those are the 1x2 grille parts (BLUE) that form the waterfall. I also used some additional SNOT-style bricks (PURPLE and ORANGE) to provide extra support for the top and side plates.

The real Horseshoe Falls is deeper and has a more irregular shape, but I think this is a great representation of the real thing. It's much better than my first Niagara Falls submission, which was a mess on the interior that created an unrealistic design with very poor angles and visuals.

So what do you think? Let me know in the comments!
