About the model
An easily customizable, practical Lego key hanger with some ready-to-build sample scenes.

Why ready-to-build scenes?
Because who would buy an empty base for a key hanger. With some ready-to-build ideas in the set it is much more practical for potential customers.

Why did I build it?
Originally, I wanted to have something used daily from Lego in my home (not just a model on a shelf). I chose a key hanger to build, and a sea theme (because my wife liked the sea then). It was 4 years ago. It was a microscale scene: a lighthouse with a sailing ship.

Recently (so, after 4 years of using it) I played with my daughters and we were all building new scenes for the key hanger, each their own. And it was fun. And I thought it would be a great idea for a modular Lego key hanger. So that it is easy to replace the scene on it. That’s it. I started to design this with Lego Ideas in mind.

Why do I believe it would make a great LEGO set?
  • It’s cool to have something practical from Lego in the house
  • It has potential for great replayability with the whole family. Modular design makes it easy to change only the scene (and even the sky and front bar)
  • It has small number of parts, so it will be cheap
  • It’s designed to be practical, the attachment to the wall is strong, It's thin so it's hard to grab it accidentally. It’s been tested for 4 years in my home ;P
  • Add to it a few empty bases for scenes, so everyone can add their own bricks and build custom scenes, ready to attach to the key hanger
  • It has a potential for enjoyable community contests (example: make your own scene, and post a photo of the key hanger in your home)

Potential problems
  • The main one is that it requires drilling into the wall (and screws) so it can’t be a set for children (need adult help with drilling). Bricks with holes are used, so no need for drilling through bricks. After mounting even small children can build scenes for it.
  • The white animal is a cat, but everyone tells me that it’s a dog. Maybe it doesn’t matter so much ;P

Sample scenes:
I wanted the scenes to be alive somehow.
  • I like space, but also medieval times, so one of them is a castle, with a small house and a crop field.
  • The second is a rebuild of the original scene, a lighthouse with a sailing ship.
  • The third is small ducks swimming to the cat. Do they swim too close? The cat is watching them…
  • And the fourth one is about a couple in the park. The boy seems a little panicked. But he will definitely find the courage.

Comments to photos
  • First few images show modular design and ease of changing scenes, sky, and front bar
  • Next four images show key hanger with each scene separately
  • Last images show some details about design and mounting to the wall (anchor and screws not shown because they are not from Lego)
  • The last image shows the empty spaces behind the front bar for the ends of the screws (tips)

Technical info
I designed key hanger in Studio program. All images are rendered from this program as well.

Have fun with this idea
