The hedgehog has probably existed for more than 30 million years and is one of the oldest living mammals on Earth. Fossil specimens have been found that are as old as the last dinosaurs!
There's no doubt that the hedgehog is an incredibly cool species and absolutely worth immortalizing in LEGO. Since I enjoy the challenge of building life-sized animals with a realistic appearance, the hedgehog was a natural choice.
Achieving those organic shapes was truly a challenge, but I believe the result can be considered a success. I made the head and feet movable to allow for different poses. As a result, it requires some support with a discreet 2x2 trans-clear brick.
The build is sturdy and would make a fun challenge and a great display piece for the older audience!
Fun facts
- There are 15 different species of hedgehogs found across Europe, Asia, and Africa. While these cool creatures mainly stay on the ground, they are quite good swimmers and can climb trees, too.
- An adult hedgehog has between 5,000 and 7,000 spines.
- Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant, so if you want to give a hedgehog something to drink, opt for a lactose-free milk substitute.
