Do you speak whale? Go on an underwater adventure with Nemo, Dory, Crush, Squirt, Mr Ray, Hank, Becky and their friends, from Disney Pixar’s amazing Finding Nemo franchise.
This is my fourth iteration of this project.
Characters and creatures include:
- Nemo, the energetic clownfish
- Dory, the forgetful blue tang fish
- Crush, the 150 year old green sea turtle and two of his offspring (including Squirt)
- Mr.Ray, the blue and white spotted ray who is Nemo's teacher
- Hank, the scheming octopus (actually ‘septopus’ as Dory calls him, as he only has 7 tentacles instead of 8) who helps Dory escape from quarantine
- Becky, the hilarious aquatic loon bird that features in Finding Dory who carries Nemo and Marlin through the air in a green bucket
- Whale - the enormous whale that swallows Dory and Nemo's father (Marlin) in Sydney Harbour
- Seagulls, who try to eat Marlin and Dory on a Sydney Harbour jetty
- Jellyfish from one of my favourite scenes in Finding Nemo
- Crab
If you’ve seen Finding Nemo, you will know how pivotal the mask is to the story line, having the address ‘P.Sherwin, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney’ written on them to help Nemo’s father track him down, so I had to include this in the scene too.
One of the most challenging aspects was getting the nose for the mask to look right. I found that by using a windscreen connected to some technic bricks and hinges, I could get the angle just perfect, and I was really pleased with how it looks.
I also spent a lot of time incorporating hinges and pivots into Crush, Mr.Ray, Hank and the whale's designs so that they could be more playable / posable.
As the whale would be very large in real life (especially compared with the other characters), I placed it behind the jetty in the background to help with the scale / forced perspective of the model.
Have fun, but watch out for those pesky seagulls… “Mine! Mine! Mine!”.
