Southernmost point ever reached!

Absolute world record for the Italian icebreaker Laura Bassi, which touched the southernmost point ever reached by a ship, during the oceanographic campaign of the 38th Italian Expedition of the National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA).

The researchers and technicians on board have reached, within the Bay of Whales, a hitherto unexplored site located at latitude 78° 44.280' S, the southernmost point ever reached in the Ross Sea in Antarctica.

290th anniversary

On May 12, 1732, exactly 290 years ago, Laura Bassi graduated from the University of Bologna, becoming one of the first women in Europe to receive a university degree.
On this occasion, she came to visit the research vessel, hoping to earn it a few more votes!
