Few art styles are more iconic than that of ancient Egyptians, with their depictions of people showing faces oriented sideways and bodies facing forward. Combine this with the fascinating Egyptian mythology, and you have the recipe for an incredible LEGO set! Introducing the "Egyptian Gods" display set, where the majestic deities Anubis, Ra, Sobek, and Thoth are brought to life in LEGO form. This set serves as both a display stand and a wall decoration.
The Gods
I selected four gods to create a symmetrical display, choosing them for both their significance and the distinctiveness of their silhouettes.
- Ra: The god of the sun, order, kings, and the sky, the chief deity of the Egyptian pantheon, is represented with a falcon head crowned with a sun disk. Ra would carry the sun across the sky during the day and travel through the underworld at night. It was believed that his tears and sweat created humans.
- Anubis: The jackal-headed god of funerary rites, the protector of graves, and the guide to the underworld. The afterlife was a significant part of Egyptian culture, making Anubis one of the more important deities. Since many of the iconic murals were found in the graves of ancient pharaohs, many included a depiction of their guide to the underworld.
- Sobek: The crocodile-headed god of the Nile. The Nile was created from Sobek's sweat, which brought both life and danger. Because of this, he was often described as a fierce protector. His role in mythology varies, with some legends even claiming he created the world by laying his eggs.
- Thoth: Known for his wisdom and association with writing, knowledge, and the moon, Thoth is depicted with the head of an ibis. Thoth was believed to be the scribe of the gods, the inventor of writing, and the keeper of knowledge. His skillset made him vital in the arbitration of godly disputes and the judgment of the dead. He was also considered to be the god of art, which made him a perfect inclusion in a LEGO set made to celebrate ancient Egyptian art.
All gods are depicted holding their Was-sceptres, a symbol of power, and their ankhs, a symbol of life.
