This is a LEGO GBC (Great Ball Contraption) Module. Its purpose is to move the LEGO soccer balls and basketballs from one place to the other. There are many different designs of these GBCs. This is a lever contraption that uses a Zig Zag motion to lift the balls higher. The video below has it running with motors but it can also be operated using a hand winch or two.
It uses gears and levers to move the balls. It also shows gear ratios using an eight tooth gear against a forty tooth gear. The video shows it running with many balls but it can easily work with fewer. Learn about the Mechanics of LEGO in action.
