She is generally portrayed as headstrong, sensuous, and articulate. She is typically depicted as Pantalone's daughter and he often tries to control her life by arranging meetings with inappropriate overaged gentlemen suitors. Men constantly fall hopelessly in love with her. She is frequently the innamorata of the play. She is typically a prima donna. She is also known as an amore, as is her male co-star.

The two Muses of the drama : Melpomene and Thalia

Thalia and Melpomene

Comedic Thalia is one of nine muses. They are associated with music, song and dance. Supposedly, they were fathered by Zeus. Thalia’s name (according to the Theoi web site) means ‘blooming, rich festivity’. Other renderings include ‘joyous, verdant’. Thalia grasps a comic mask in her hand. She may also hold a bugle. Melpomene, means “choir.” She personifies tragedy. She carries in hand a tragic mask or sword. Both Thalia and Melpomene are adorned with ivy.

Minifigure for a traditionnal Commedia del'arte character : Pantalone

Pantaloon dressed in a tight-fitting red vest, red breeches and stockings, a pleated black cassock, slippers, and a soft brimless hat. Later versions of the character sometimes wore long trousers (pantaloons). His mask was gaunt and swarthy with a large hooked nose, and he had a disorderly gray goatee.

The humour of the role stemmed from Pantaloon’s avarice and his amorous entanglements. He would starve his servant until he barely cast a shadow. If he discharged him, he made certain to do so before dinner. If married, he was a foil for his wife, who was young, pretty, disrespectful, and completely untrustworthy, and he was also a foil for the intrigues and deceits of his daughters and servant girls. Although anxious about his reputation, he engaged in flirtations with young girls who openly mocked him.
