Thanks to feedback received, in the revised version that I've been working on, the alcove area has been redesigned so that it swings open revealing a secret tiled area with arched ceiling that can lead the city residents to hidden areas.
The changes have resulted in the whole of the baseplate now being used, and the addition of many more tiled elements.
