The Legend of the Sea Serpent
Throughout history, sailors have claimed to have seen the sea serpent—Loch Ness in Scotland, the Midgard Serpent from Norse mythology, Selma, the Seljord Serpent from Seljord in Norway, etc. The stories tell of a sea monster that rises up like a column from the water, attacks ships, and devours people.
History
Norse Mythology – The Midgard Serpent
In Norse mythology, the Midgard Serpent (Jörmungandr) is one of the most famous sea serpents. It is so large that it encircles the entire earth and bites its own tail. According to the myth, the Midgard Serpent will release its tail and rise during Ragnarok, the end of the world, where it will battle the god Thor.
