Packaging Ideas and Final thoughts

For my last update I thought I would share an idea I had for the packaging of the Typewriter. I would love it to look like a retro Typewriter Case and so have put together a basic cardboard prototype. The LEGO set would come in this cardboard case, and once assembled the finished model could still fit in to the box. I have not designed any of the graphics to go on the outside of the box, but thought that if all the information (set number, piece count, main image, LEGO logo etc) was printed on to a slip cover, the main case could stay predominantly plane just like a real typewriter case. I think this would add to the fun retro appeal of the set.

Also in response to a few questions I have had about the piece count of my design, I have finally got around to counting the pieces! There are 1254 pieces.

Thankyou again to everyone who had shown an interest in my LEGO Typewriter idea, followed and given their support, It is very much appreciated. The 10,000 goal is very much in sight now and I have really enjoyed the journey.

Thanks again

Steve

LEGO Mindstorms EV3 upgrade

Thanks so much to everyone who has supported my idea so far.

I have been wanting to add to the basic mechanism for some time, and I have finally done it! The Typewriter is now fully motorised and programmed using the Mindstorms EV3 system.

I have significantly modified the internal mechanisms and now have two large motors driving the moving parts.

Here is a link to a short video from ny flickr page of the new mechanisms in action:

Please continue to show your support by sharing the idea, as there are less than 2500 supporters needed now :-)

New Vintage Version

I am currently in the process of designing a new update for the typewriter. I spotted in the background of a photo of Ole Kirk Christiansen, his old typewriter. I did some research and believe it's an Erica 10 model. I was lucky enough to be able to then find and buy the exact same model!

I have started remodelling the typewriter, using Sand Green as the main colour, with Dark Green keys.

Thankyou so much to everyone who has already supported my idea, I'm really close to 5000 supporters now, and can't thank you enough for all your support.

Can you help think of some Quotes?

Thankyou so much for your interest and support for my typewriter project. I have had a couple of comments about possible printing on the typewriter paper. So I thought it would be a good idea to open it up to you, the followers of my project. I have a few quotes I have thought of, but if you could think of any more to add to the list, you never know, they could be included in the real set if it reaches 10,000 supporters.

My idea is that there would be a sticker sheet included in the set, with a number of different quotes included so that each customer could choose which one they apply to their build.

Here is my list so far:

LEGO is from the Danish words LEG GODT which means PLAY WELL

"Only the Best is Good Enough" Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, LEGO's motto from 1936

"To Develop and Inspire the Builders of Tomorrow", LEGO'scurrent motto.

"We don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing". George Bernard Shaw

"How is your work/play balance? Remember to embrace your inner child and always make time to play" Steve Guinness

If you can think of any more potential quotes, please add them in the comments.

Fun Colour Options

Just for fun I thought I would make another typewriter in different colours. It's pretty much the same build, but with totally different colours! Hope you like it.

Thankyou so much to everyone who has already supported my project, please share with your friends so I can climb towards the 10,000 supporters goal.

Video Update of the Typewriter Mechanism and Keyboard Layout justification

A massive Thankyou to everyone who has already supported my project. This is just a quick update in reply to some questions in the comments. It shows the mechanism working and I give an explanation to my design decisions regarding the keyboard layout :-) Thanks for all the positive feedback.
