This is my tribute to the iconic TV show "Reading Rainbow", which aired from 1983 to 2006.

Hosted by beloved actor, director and philanthropist LeVar Burton, for 23 years the purpose of "Reading Rainbow" was to instill a love for literacy and reading in children.

The earliest episodes of "Reading Rainbow" started with their classic animated theme song, "Butterfly in the Sky", which featured kids reading and discovering new adventures as the books they discovered changed the worlds around them.

My design is a display piece that features several homages to that classic theme song & LeVar Burton;

  • A brick built version of the classic yellow "Reading Rainbow" logo (which looks like an open book) as the base
  • A minifig LeVar Burton reading from a stack of books to a group of children
  • A brick built butterfly similar one from the animated theme song that leaves a rainbow trail as it flies across a blue sky
  • A rainbow springs up near LeVar and the children, flowing through the different scenes, the rest of the letters and clouds
  • On those clouds are brick built recreations of memorable scenes from the theme song, including a “Dragon and the Sand Castle” & “Astronauts in Space” (both are adjustable and articulate)

Why do I think "LEGO Reading Rainbow" would make a great set?

"Reading Rainbow" and LeVar Burton helped open new worlds and ideas to generations of children. That is what it did for me and I know I am not the only one. I have such immense respect for the people who worked on that show. I also personally have admired LeVar Burton my entire life, he was one of my childhood heroes growing up. I used to sit in my living room as a kid playing with my LEGO and watching Reading Rainbow.

Using a real world documentary-like perspective, each episode of “Reading Rainbow” would take kids to different locations around our world, exposing them to new and exciting adventures, just like in the books they introduced.

Episodes featured the voices of some of the most famous actors, actresses, poets and artists of our time, reading new stories to children while introducing different themes or topics for them to understand. It taught children of a bigger world and to dream of what they could be.

“Reading Rainbow” taught generations of children that reading books has a place outside of education & in our personal lives. That reading could be a source of enjoyment and creativity. Generations of adults today grew up appreciating a good book because of this iconic TV show and they learned the same lesson I did, reading is fundamental. And LeVar became the voice that generations of us trusted to do that with kindness, dignity & respect.

Personally I think “Reading Rainbow” and LEGO make a lot of sense together because I feel both have a legacy of sparking a child's imagination and love for creativity, however as LeVar used to say "But you don't have to take my word for it."
