10K Club Interview: BOTW TEMPLE OF TIME, LONDON UNDERGROUND and JAPANESE CASTLE by LEGOverwatch

Meet Jayden Peng, a.k.a. LEGOverwatch and his three projects in this review - an incredible achievement! Today we take a brief look at BOTW TEMPLE OF TIME, LONDON UNDERGROUND & JAPANESE CASTLE. There's enough variety here for almost anyone! Give Jayden your congratulations in the comment section.

ABOUT YOURSELF

  1. Who are you?
    Hi! I am Jayden Peng!

  2. How old are you?
    I just turned 16!

  3. How and when did your interest in LEGO products come about?
When I was little I was always building LEGO builds with my cousins. They are a few years older than me so usually I pick up stuff from them.

  4. What is the LEGO hobby to you? What does it mean to you? How does it fit in your life? E.g. build, display, meetups, play the games or 'just' watch the cartoons.
Recently LEGO building has played a huge role in my life. I'm a sophomore and this is the first year I am struggling with school. I barely have any time to build and I’m struggling to keep up with all the new content I learn.

What makes it a lot better is the small amount of time I spend on LEGO Ideas everyday. It really makes me happy to see people saying such nice things about the things I create and it helps me get through the day.

  5. What is your favourite LEGO theme (current or past)? Why? And has any theme inspired your building style or preference in any particular way?
I love Mechs and Dragons, and I think the reason I like them so much is because of Ninjago! Ninjago was the show I grew up with and I think it shaped my interest in ninjas, Japanese architecture, and mythical folklore.

  6. What is your favourite official LEGO set ever? Why?
My favourite set currently is the Ultra Combinaon Mech. I've always wanted a minifigure scale Voltron like mech and I was so happy when they made this set!

ABOUT YOUR PROJECT

  1. Where did your interest in this particular model come from?

    BOTW Temple of Time
I have always wanted to build a Zelda set. Zelda was the first game that I ever really loved and felt excited to play every day.

    Japanese Castle
This build was inspired by my favourite Minecraft build! I often use this design to build houses in Minecraft and I was so happy that BlueBitsYT let me use his design to build it with LEGO bricks!

    London Underground
My family very recently travelled to London, and I loved the train system and thought it would be so cool to build in LEGO form!

  2. How long was the process of making the project, and what did you have to research as well? What kind of prep, research and design phases did you go through to produce your creation?

    BOTW Temple of Time
This build actually took a wild to prepare. In BOTW I had to get a bunch of savage Lynel bows to make Link invisible. After that, it was just trying to get the proportions right.

    Japanese Castle
To prepare for the project I did an inial sketch. Originally, it was meant to just be one build but over time it grew to have a pond, waterfall, and bonsai tree!

    London Underground
I had to go on Google maps quite a bit. Originally I was also planning to have another segment added to it but then it would exceed the piece limit.

  3. How did it feel when you reached the magic 10,000 votes and how long did it take?

    Japanese Castle
I was so happy when this build reached 10k. When I first posted it, the supporter amount quite quickly decreased, but thanks to the staff pick I was able to increase the visibility! I was so happy when this set reached 10k because I have always loved this castle design!

  4. What is your favourite building technique or part/section that you’ve incorporated into your Product Idea?

    BOTW Temple of Time
For this build, I focused on texture. Some of my favourite LEGO techniques are sideways bricks, SNOT technique, and a colour gradient from light grey to dark bluish-grey to olive green

    Japanese Castle
For the water, I experimented to find my desired look. I ended up putting trans light blue tiles over turquoise plants, giving the water a really realistic effect.

ABOUT LEGO IDEAS

  1. Do you have any useful advice about creating a successful LEGO Ideas project?
Have fun with it! If you like it, most of the time, other people will like it too!
