"It might not connect with too many people, but those it does, it'll hit deeply."
Bocchi the Rock! (ぼっち・ざ・ろっく!) is a Japanese four-panel manga series written and illustrated by Aki Hamazi. The series was recently adapted into an Anime series by CloverWorks in Fall 2022.

The story follows Hitori "Bocchi" Gotoh, an extremely anxious and socially awkward high school girl who longs to overcome her anxiety and make friends by becoming a rock musician. After trying but failing to do so for 3 years, she is suddenly given a chance when she gets invited by the kind and friendly drummer Nijika to perform at a small music venue called STARRY. Despite their first concert being a flop, she decides to stay where together with the eccentric but mischievous bassist Ryo and the runaway guitarist Kita, they form the rock group known as Kessoku Band!
I designed this set in celebration of the theatrical film that will be released this summer as well as to pay tribute to this beloved series and its creators!

The set itself is made of around 710 pieces and is based on the primary music venue featured in the show, STARRY. The build includes multiple new printed pieces (including a small display tile featuring the series' logo) along with a large variety of musical equipment and instruments which can easily be removed and displayed separately if need be. As expected, this set also includes all 4 members of Kessoku Band as minifigures:
  • Hitori Gotoh
  • Nijika Ijichi
  • Ryo Yamada
  • Ikuyo Kita

All the pictures for this project were made using various programs including Stud.io, Mecabricks and Adobe Photoshop. The minifigures specifically were constructed and rendered in Mecabricks with all the printed parts being designed in Adobe Illustrator.
Despite its relatively obscure origins, Bocchi the Rock is a series that has deeply resonated with many who have experienced social anxiety, myself included. Having a set based on this series would be a dream come true for many of us who can relate to Bocchi's struggles.

This is without mentioning the appeal the show has had with many music fans due to its celebration of the art of rock, giving a set like this an even wider audience to appeal to. It's for these reasons that I think this would make for a great IDEAS set!
I hope you enjoyed this IDEAS project as much as I enjoyed designing it.
