Furby

Anyone that grew up in the late 90's and early 2000's is very familiar with the cultural phenomenon of the Furby. It was a must have toy for years, came in a variety of colors and patterns, and was the electronic pet that every kid wanted. Their big ears and big eyes along with their soft fur made them cute, adorable, and very popular. Motion, sound and their own language just added to the appeal. There was even a short lived conspiracy theory that they would record your speech and spy on you, which was of course ridiculous and untrue. And I'm not just saying that because [REDACTED] told me to.

My son, who acts like he was born in the wrong decade, is absolutely obsessed with Furbys and 80's - Y2K electronic toys. So I thought, why not enshrine that interest in another, Lego. So I went about designing this set. The Lego Furby went through a few different iterations before I settled on this one, capturing its best features and essence in the Lego medium. I even managed to include a few Easter eggs along the way. One is a wink and a nod to the aforementioned conspiracy theory, where I included a man in black hiding away in the Furby's head recording whatever you say in its presence. The other is perhaps the most important part of any Furby, its big, loving, heart.

Right now there are only a few play features; The eyelids open and close, you can move the ears up and down, and you can open the back to reveal the scene and heart inside. I would like to add a movable mouth at some point, but as it stands I have yet to find a way to do that and have it look good. I went for the classic black and white pattern for this Furby, but it could easily be modified for any number of colors and patterns, just like their 90's brethren. This set would be perfect for any nostalgic millennial, or a Y2K enthusiast, and would be a great addition to anyone's Lego collection.
