The story this work tells!
Welcome to the Space Academy – Building 9
The journey to the stars begins here. In the Space Academy, where prospective spacemen learn everything they need to know for later missions in the vastness of space.
"Welcome to the Space Academy"
The property
In building complex no. 9, you will learn how to apply your new skills under realistic conditions in simulated mission scenarios, because the best theoretical knowledge is of no use if you cannot use it in practice.
On level 1 of the main building (to the left of the elevator tower) there is a command bridge comparable to those on large command or carrier spaceships. With a drive core control segment, five operational control consoles and a main computer terminal. [Special feature: functioning sliding doors at the entrance]
If you take the elevator to level 2, you will find an energy core simulator with control panels, a central data processing interface and a hangar for a training pod. [Special feature: sliding door that can be opened with a rotating and sliding landing platform for the training pod]
If you take the elevator to level 3, there is a landing zone for an LL-80 training spaceship of type 3.
[Special feature: An additional helmet and oxygen tank in black for emergencies]
To the right of the elevator tower is an outbuilding for the instructors, with their equipment (helmets and oxygen tanks) and many controls for monitoring and evaluating the training data of the "Space Academy" graduates.
[Special feature: Here you will find helmets and oxygen tanks in light gray, dark tan, dark gray, tan, black and dark blue]
On the roof of the building is another landing zone for a LL-11 training spaceship and in front of the building is a parking lot for the 6x6 vehicle.
[Special feature: Access to the roof is via the staircase at the back of the building]
The towering central tower not only contains the elevator to reach the upper floors of the main building, but high-resolution radar systems are also installed on its roof, which receive data from the geosynchronous satellites in orbit.
[Special feature: There is a functioning elevator in the tower that goes to floors 2 or 3 of the main building]
All floors of the main building (left) and the annex (right) are modularly removable for easy access to each floor, and the tower with the elevator can be opened at three points for easy access.
In front of the tower is the monument to "peaceful exploration": two differently colored statues reach out to each other, a dark red spaceman with a detector and a dark blue spaceman with a universal tool.
The instructors
Accompany the colorful troop of space babies on their adventures to learn everything there is to know about the qualifications needed in the depths of space. Blue, red, yellow, black, green, white, pink, purple and orange can't wait to meet their instructors.
Steffi's (Light Gray Spacesuit) area of expertise is navigation, and she is responsible for theoretical flight training. No one can teach more interestingly than she can, and her constant companion is a mobile "navigation module". She should not be underestimated just because she teaches theoretical content. She is one of the most decorated pilots at the academy.
Greg (Dark Tan Spacesuit) is the flight instructor, he teaches the practical aspects of operating a spaceship. He is rarely seen without his "on-board computer uplink", which he can use to remotely control the spaceship if a pilot he is training loses control. No other instructor spends more time in the cockpit than he does. No one holds more flight records than he does or has more awards.
Chris (Dark Gray Spacesuit) specializes in technology and logistics. He is the facility manager of the Space Academy and with his multi-tool, he can break things that are intact or repair things that are broken. He can get anything that is needed. He likes to answer questions. He likes green sweaters.
Helen (Tan Spacesuit) is responsible for air traffic control. She sees everything, knows everything, and no one can hide anything from her. She is always in contact with the pilots via radio and assigns flight vectors and landing zones or gives take-off clearance. Rumor has it that she also responds to the name "Granny," but no one has been brave enough to try it out because no one wants to mess with the head of flight control.
The vehicles
For practical training, the most modern vehicles are essential. Five different types are actively used in building 9 of the academy.
The training pod is a single-seat, highly maneuverable and easy-to-control small spaceship. Everyone first completes their first flying lessons in this pod before being allowed to control larger spaceships.
The LL-11 "Pathfinder" is a very fast four-seater spaceship with excellent sensors. Far away from the academy, it is used as a scientific research ship, scout, courier and reconnaissance ship. Spaceships of this type are very durable and reliable.
The LL-80 "Sentinel" is a powerful two-seat spaceship that is very robust and heavily armed. Equipped with the latest technology, it is one of the most sophisticated spaceships in the academy and only for advanced pilots. But anyone who has ever sat in the cockpit of an LL-80 never wants to fly anything else again.
The academy's ground vehicles include a 6x6 Prowler with 12 seats, a very robust and fast sprung reconnaissance vehicle – sometimes affectionately known as the "school bus".
[Special feature: functional airlock at the rear and functioning pendulum axle suspension, removable roof]
The large 4x4 Carryer is a 2-seat heavy-duty transport with double-axle steering. Despite its large size, it is extremely easy and light to control, and the cockpit of the vehicle is very similar to that of the LL-80. The transport vehicle can be used to transport fuel, supplies and equipment, and if a training pod crashes somewhere, it can also be transported back to the academy on the large loading area.
[Special feature: working synchronized front and rear axle steering]

The entire model consists of 4990 pieces on a 48x48 base plate.
Why did we build it?
We wanted to create a great space model that combines the advantages of modular buildings with the cult factor of Lego Space. @Santheg is a big fan of modular buildings and @Monsieur Greenhorn submitted the first Space Baby project to Lego Ideas in 2023 – combining these passions results in this fascinating structure.
The foundation for this was already laid during the Exhibit your Creativity in the LEGO House challenge, where the MashUp Madness: Space meets Modularwas created. This model was created by Santheg,
but was strongly inspired by the Classic Space Baby Command Baseby Monsieur Greenhorn, which is also mentioned in the description. Said MOC will be exhibited throughout 2025 in the Masterpiece Gallery of the LEGO Housein Billund/Denmark, the home of the brick!
Why I believe it would make a great LEGO set?
The model is a great display model, with lots of beautiful details, but it also offers great play functions and interesting, loving details everywhere. This would be a set that we would want and that we would like to be able to buy from Lego because it contains everything that inspires us.
We look forward to your support!
If you leave a comment, it's easy for us to support your projects too.
Have a great time and enjoy building. 🥳
