The Great Sphinx of Giza

My family and I have just returned from our summer holiday in Egypt. During our trip with had the opportunity to visit the only remaining of the seven wonders of the ancient world - The Pyramids of Giza.

Visiting the pyramids was an exciting, wonderful and humbling experience. How could these structures be built with such precision with the technology available to them?

The Giza pyramid complex is home to the Great Pyramid (LEGO set 21058), the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes. The final element of the complex, is the Great Sphinx of Giza.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognisable statues in the world.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Great Sphinx was created around 2500 BC for the pharaoh Khafre, the builder of the Second Pyramid at Giza.

With the Great Pyramid already in existence as a LEGO set, and the ability to add the additional pyramids relatively straight forward, I decided to set myself the challenge of trying to build the Great Sphinx out of LEGO.

The Great Sphinx is smaller than you may think when compared to the size of the pyramids, providing a challenge when trying to keep it (roughly) to scale and include the organic shape of the human head and lions body.

In the design I only used LEGO elements/colours that were available, but there may be new coloured elements created to enable a more organic shape, particularly around the tail.

Now I ask that you help me to add to the the Great Sphinx of Giza to the Lego Architecture series through LEGO Ideas.

Please support my project.
