Old-Fashioned Milkshake Trio

It's a hot summer afternoon and you head to the local soda fountain with two friends to cool off. You wander across the black and white checkered floor toward the counter, select three red padded stools, and sit down. As you are reading the hand-written chalkboard with the flavor list, you try to decide which type of milkshake to order. Will it be chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry?

With the Old-Fashioned Milkshake Trio set, you don't have to choose. You get to build all three mouth-watering designs! The chocolate, vanilla and strawberry milkshakes are designed with old-fashioned ribbed glasses, a short handle and a base. Each delicious shake includes a classic red and white straw, a tower of whipped cream, and a cherry to top it all off.

This was a fun set to both design and build. The stability of the glass was a key challenge as if the design was too flimsy, the Lego pieces would shatter apart when squeezed, just like real glass can shatter. Pieces certainly went flying multiple times early on in the process. The final design is not as complicated to build as I was initially concerned it might be, and it is very stable. The hexagonal plate on bottom and hinge plates on both the top and bottom of the glass help hold everything in place. While I designed this set with nostalgia in mind, milkshakes continue to be very popular today so the design will relate to a wide audience.

Each milkshake uses approximately 414 pieces and measures 28 cm (11 in) tall by 8.9 cm (3.5 in) diameter from the base of the glass to the top of the straw. The glass itself is about 19 cm (7.5 in) tall, making it a 1:1 scale model of a traditional milkshake glass size. The total set piece count is 1242.
