What is it?
1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale

Why I built it:
Ever since LEGO introduced their 8-stud-wide cars, I have been fascinated with the creative techniques and element-usage that the designers are constantly thinking up. Their growing ingenuity within the sets inspired me to build my more on my own! The Lancia Stratos is an iconic car, and in my opinion, one that is deserving of its own set!

My goal was to replicate the 1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale as accurately as possible, using stickers/decals only when necessary. I started thinking of LEGO’s car lineup as a scale;
9-studs-wide: Large cars and SUV’s
8-studs-wide: Standard-sized car (most sets)
7-studs-wide: Small cars

The 7-stud-width allowed me to get the right proportions and capture the right amount of detail.
I used medium azure bricks as my color of choice because it suits the car very well! I decided against using the Alitalia livery, as iconic as it is, because I wanted to focus on getting the shape right without hiding the shape of the car. A blue Stratos also happens to be the first thing that comes up on Wikipedia.

Why it would make an awesome LEGO set:
LEGO has the ability to connect generations. My dad and I have bonded over the build process in LEGO's car sets. As Lancia is on the rise, there’s no better way to acclimate the brand to younger generations than by utilizing LEGO!

Features and details:
  • Easily interchangeable rally/stradale front end
  • Dark nougat interior (one functional seat, one for aesthetic purposes only)
  • Hidden engine bay

Facts about this model:
  • 251 Pieces
  • Only 9 unique decorated pieces
  • This is my 14th, and final, version of the build!

Additional Information:
I created an alternative model, not shown, that utilizes the newer vehicle baseplate but modified to be one stud narrower. Should this piece exist, the interior of the vehicle would be more accurate to that of the real car, in addition to being more robust of a build in general :) The exterior would remain unchanged.
