Often referred to as the Model-T Ford of aircraft, the Piper J3 Cub is a simple, lightweight, affordable airplane. It's efficient design and high maneuverability make it the ideal plane for a multitude of purposes and is still highly prized as a bush plane. Built between 1938 and 1947, many of these planes are still flying today. Often outfitted with large tires for landing on rough, rural airfields, or pontoons for landing on small lakes or snow, the Piper J3 Cub's lightweight body makes it ideal for getting in and out of locations most other planes will never go. When I was a young boy living in Alaska, our mail was delivered in a plane much like this - a fact nearly forgotten to history until our daughter was born. Her name? Piper. A true coincidence, but nonetheless this new little girl in our life triggered a renewed interest in the Piper J3 Cub. And, what started a year ago as an homage to our little girl soon became an obsession. The more I tinkered with the plane, the more I wanted it to become.
This model is ideal for displaying on a shelf, or to swoosh around the house. Like the real Piper J3 Cub, this set is lightweight and durable. And, like the original, the Cub's yellow body color is sure to catch your eye. I've designed this set for the builder to easily switch between wheels or pontoons, depending on preference.
