Covered bridges may be simple structures, but are enjoyed by many people. Often these bridges have history and are a part of the charm of the area where they are located.
My project is a covered bridge, inspired by the real Irish Bend Covered Bridge in Oregon. It has white sides with a simple texture due to the wooden construction, a gray roof, and a road made of boards going through that is used by people walking and biking. I replicated those details as best as I could. Using brown plates and rod pieces on the interior, I tried to mimic the structure that supports the bridge’s walls and roof. The covered bridge which inspired my model has many beams, supports, a fence-style railing, and other features that would make for a fun building experience if incorporated into an official set.
The scale is smaller than minifigure scale to better fit a reasonable LEGO model. I decided to make the bridge 18 studs long and 8 studs wide, and the scenery around it extends around the bridge a little. Minifigures can fit on the bridge but it is more of a footbridge scale to them and cannot fit minifigure-scale cars. The bridge still works as a way for minifigures to safely and stylishly cross the creek. A stone path to one side also allows them to enjoy the creek and flowers if they desire.
I believe this would be a great LEGO set because LEGO is yet to release a covered bridge set. Covered bridges have existed for a long time in the real world; it only makes sense for them to be represented in LEGO form as well. I also think that such a project would be popular to a wide audience. People from communities that have covered bridges, people who seek out these structures, history fans, and those who who simply think covered bridges are neat would enjoy a set such as this.
The reason I built this is because I was inspired by real-life covered bridges that I have visited over the years. Across the world, old structures such as original covered bridges have been lost to time, but restoration and preservation efforts have allowed some historic bridges to stay within the communities they have been a part of for so long. Covered bridges have played a part in infrastructure and engineering history as they served the genuine purpose of making bridges last longer in hard weather conditions. The fact that covered bridges are beautiful and add to the aesthetic value of a place has always been a bonus, but a welcome one at that.
I hope you enjoy my project!
