Dr. Fred’s Time Machine

I'm glad to resubmit my previous project Dr. Fred’s Motel, based on the graphic adventure game Day of the Tentacle (Maniac Mansion II), developed and published by LucasArts. It represents the scene in which Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne are about to travel across the time by the effect of Dr. Fred’s Chron-o-John time machine.

I initially built this project with LDD. Now I have remastered it with Studio, redesigning the main components and adding a lot of details. It’s been a lot of work, but at the same time very pleasant too. The main features are set forth below.

Main features

  • The set has been designed onto two base plates (32x32 and 16x32).
  • The set has about 2.900 pieces in total.

Time machine

The time machine is basically an old car mounted onto a distributor base, which is powered by a diamond. As it happens with all the graphics of this game, every object is remarkably rounded and distorted from what would be a more realistic representation. So, designing the car in this manner has been quite a challenge, specially with the wheels, which are inclined in different axes.

The time machine further comprises a traffic light and an operating lever. A metallic platform and a staircase lead to the operating lever.

Time Capsules

The set has three time capsules, one for each of the main characters of the game (Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne). Each capsule has been built with about 200 pieces and may lodge a minifigure within the same.

Stickers

I have made the stickers using Paint program. The images are based on the videogame.

  • Diamond (stuck on the car’s windscreen).
  • Vent grilles (one for each capsule).
  • Door handles (one for each capsule).
  • Car lights.

Minifigures

  • Dr. Fred.

I hope you like it.
