Welcome to the Corner Creamery, the most delicious ice cream shop in LEGO city!
Let's take a look at this highly detailed modular building.
-- The specs --
This set has 2,524 pieces and comes with 9 minifigs. It sits on 32x32 footprint - or 10 inches by 10 inches. It is also 10 inches tall.
-- The tour --
On the street, you will see the colorful facade of the Corner Creamery. Its sign and the giant ice cream cone at the corner are hard to miss. They are local landmarks as you find your way through the confusing streets of LEGO city. As you go left of the ice cream cone on Redbeard Road, you will see the entrance just on the other side of the bike rack. As you enter the shop, you are greeted by one of the friendly employees who is ready to scoop your favorite tasty treat. Take a look at the ice cream flavor choices hanging above the freezer and let them know which one you want. Then, walk around the corner to the toppings station and pick what you want on top. At the end of the counter, you can pay for your ice cream before walking out the door onto Majisto Ave. You can take your ice cream with you as you head elsewhere, or you can enjoy it on the bench outside the shop. If you prefer, you can also eat inside at one of the two tables.
If you are one of the employees at Corner Creamery, then there are extra areas of the store that only you can access. You enter from the street like the customers, but then you can go behind the counter by using the door to the right of the register. While serving your customers, if you notice that you run out of a certain flavor of ice cream from the freezers by the counter or storage freezers in the wall, you can go into the back room to get some more. Another freezer section is located under a staircase. There is also a small employee bathroom around the corner.
It's not just the customers and the employees of Corner Creamery who like this place. It is also the people who live in the apartment located right above it. With an address of 103 Redbeard Road, the entrance to the apartment is located just to the left of the door to Corner Creamery. (Even though the Corner Creamery is at the intersection of Redbeard Road and Majisto Ave, it's street address is technically 100 Redbeard Road since that's where the entrance is located.)
After entering the outside door of the apartment, you will go up a flight of stairs to the second story of the building. As you enter the second floor, you come upon the main living area of the apartment. There is a large living room with a comfy couch, coffee table, and TV cabinet. To the side of the living room is a fully furnished kitchen (complete with stove, sink, fridge, etc.). You can prepare your meals there and then eat them at the table next to the window. Opposite the kitchen, there is a small half-bath and then a small closet under the stairs to the third floor.
Head up the stairs to the third floor and you will reach the spacious bedroom. This bedroom has several wonderful features - the main one being the amazing bay window that overlooks the corner of Redbeard Road and Majisto Ave. This window is a great spot to curl up under a patchwork quilt and watch the bustling streets below. (This would also be an awesome view to watch fireworks!) The bedroom includes a large king-sized bed, complete with headboard, foot-board, and a cedar chest at the foot of the bed. There is also a beautiful skylight above the bed to allow for stargazing while curled up under your blankets. If you don't want to look at the stars, you can always watch the large flat screen TV on the wall across from the bed. Next to the flat screen TV is the door to the complete bathroom - including toilet, sink, and shower. In opposite corners of the room are his and hers walk in closets. There is also room for a small desk next to one of the windows. This is a wonderful apartment for anyone to live in. Along with all these great features, you also have easy access to ice cream!
On the roof of this building, you will find some exhaust vents, an air-conditioning system, and some decorative railings.
Whether you are an ice cream fan, an employee of Corner Creamery, the residents of 103 Redbeard Road, or even passersby in LEGO City, the Corner Creamery is a wonderful place!
-- The design process --
I have been designing LEGO models for several years now - but this is my first modular design. I'll admit that the level of detail on other modulars impressed me so much that I thought I could never match it. However, after being inspired by an ice cream shop, I spent many, many hours building this Corner Creamery modular. It felt like five builds in one - street, ice cream shop, second floor, third floor, and roof. It was very tricky designing three floors of a building and a roof that all fit in the same unusual footprint shape. Also, the floor designs had to take into account the placement of the stairs and the bathrooms. (On every floor, the bathroom is in the same corner because the pipes in the building need to be together.) It was a huge undertaking designing this model. I felt like it really stretched my LEGO creativity - but I am VERY pleased with the result. Each level was so satisfying to design and build - and they all work well together. I think it would be a very satisfying building experience for anyone who builds this as an actual set. This set would fit well in any modular city and would also look great on display. It has both great play value and display value. I would be very honored to have this set sit alongside the other famous LEGO modular sets - both on the store shelf and the LEGO collectors display shelf.
-- Can you find these details? (Or, "How well did you pay attention to the pictures?") --
- The Corner Creamery logo is an ice cream cone with three scoops (vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry) with a cherry on top. How many times is this logo featured in this build? (The stripes on the large sign don't count since there is no cone and no cherry.)
- There is an intercom system at the outside door for 103 Redbeard Road. Can you find the matching intercom speaker in the apartment for the residents to buzz in their guests?
- Can you find a cat eating out of its food bowls?
- There is a blue mailbox outside, but someone didn't put their letter in it. Where did that person leave the envelope?
- Where is the drawing of the clown displayed?
- Where is the lamp with the purple lampshade?
- Where are the yellow flowers?
- One bird is sitting outside the window of the apartment. Can you find the other bird?
- Where is the trophy displayed? (It's a micro-statue piece.)
- Someone forgot to replace the toilet paper roll in one of the bathrooms. Which one?
