Spyglass

This is my recreation of a classic spyglass telescope, similar to the ones used in the 1700s and 1800s aboard sea-faring vessels, and were among the first devices that were used to see into the stars. My recreation of this classic device was designed to function exactly like the original, with expanding and receding barrels as well as 2 large lenses at the beginning and the end of the spyglass.

I created this model from scratch because I have always been interested and fascinated by old, antique devices and inventions, such as hourglasses, clocks and of course, spyglasses. This is because, despite being old, all these inventions are made to perform one task and always seem to perform it in some interesting, complex way. For example, the hourglass and old clocks were simply created to tell the time, and a spyglass to see long distances, yet the way and the journey they take to fulfill that task is often complex and interesting, leading to my fascination and the reason why I designed this LEGO model.

This has definitely been one of the most difficult models on my part to design, as I originally thought it was going to only need simple, studs-on-top techniques to create it. However, when finishing that first draft of the model, it was severely simple, boring and uninteresting, leading to a complete redesign of the model. I started fresh again with many slope 1x4 pieces connected to form the barrels, accompanied by an interesting technique to connect the edges, and the rest of the barrel was simply built with 1x1 cylinders and 1x2 round plates. I updated and revamped this technique over and over again, and eventually finished with three distinct and different barrels. After this I started on the lenses, the most difficult parts of the design. The small one was simple, utilizing two disk pieces with a special frame to attach it to the main design. The second one, however, was far more complex, but I eventually got it done using lots of SNOT construction with special slope and angled pieces. This led to my finished model, which I believe is the best it could be and as accurate as possible to the original.
