Working Monkey Music Box, From the Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite Broadway musicals. The music box with the figurine of a monkey playing cymbals, is a heart-breaking icon in this musical, which touches me deeply every time it appears in phantom's lair, and the tune of the song Masquerade starts.

I made a LEGO brick version of this music box. Dimensions are: H 31.8cm (12.5”) x L 29.7cm (11.7”) x W 20.3cm (8.0”). It is kinetic, that is to say, the brick monkey claps the cymbals when you turn the crank. To make it play real sound, I come up with two options:

  1. As I demonstrated in the video above, I have attached a standard 30-note music box inside (check the image below). This kind of music box allows you to customize a tune by punching holes on a paper strip. I transposed Masquerade to the proper key so that it fits the pitch range of the system perfectly. I taped head and tail of the strip together, so that the tune plays continuously.
  2. The second option is to leverage the LEGO Powered-Up platform, putting some motors/sensors inside the box and let the phone/computer play the tune when the crank spins. There is no prototype to demo this option yet.

The Phantom of the Opera has a huge fan base worldwide, I find this project a great gift for all the LEGO plus musical lovers. It is a LEGO Technic challenge, a playful music gem and a timeless stage icon, all in one box.

If you would like to see the project become a real LEGO set, please consider support it and share it with your friends. Thank you!
