Galactic Griff!

The first spark of inspiration for this set came from reading Bill Watterson's classic comic strip Calvin & Hobbes. Over the years, many fans of Calvin & Hobbes have showcased their love for Watterson's work by creating LEGO sets featuring his beloved characters. Of course, since Mr. Watterson does not license the strip for merchandising of any kind, none of these sets could ever be officially produced by LEGO. That said, in the comic, Calvin does have an imaginary alter ego named Spaceman Spiff. This character is the inspiration for this set. I wanted to make a set that captured the same retro sci-fi feel of those Spiff-centric strips. My hope is that other fans of Calvin & Hobbes will appreciate the inspiration, and enjoy building and playing with this set as much as I have. So, without further ado...

Commander Gale Griffin is GALACTIC GRIFF! Join him and his faithful droid Disco as they explore a strange, alien planet!

Galactic Griff is a set comprised of three modules. The black border on each is meant to evoke the feeling that each module is a panel in a comic strip.

The centerpiece and largest module of the three features our titular hero, Commander Gale Griffin, along with his flying saucer, The Red Heron. This module is also unique of the three, as it features two modes. The first mode is for display, with The Red Heron mounted to the surface of the module. The second mode is for play, as the saucer is switched out for a small rock formation, which opens up the module for Gale Griffin to explore and have his adventures.

The second module features an adult-sized alien which may or may not pose a threat to our hero.

The third and smallest module features a child-sized alien and Griff's faithful droid, Disco.

I chose LEGO's Classic Space logo for Griff's suit because it just felt... right. This will also make the set a potential draw for Classic Space collectors. Both the logo and alien mouth decals were added digitally to the photos; that said, both alien mouth decals are custom designs, and I have hi-res versions of them should this set garner the necessary support and subsequent approval of LEGO for production.

If you love Calvin & Hobbes, or even just good retro space adventure, I would be honored to have your support!
