Help your fellow builder by leaving your feedback based on these three criteria:
- Originality: How original is this - never seen before?
- Building Techniques: How much skill do you think the creator of this MOC has, in terms of building technique?
- Details: Express how much you like the details of the build.
Your feedback is only shown to the creator as well as yourself. It is not available for other users to see. The creator won't see your user name.
As I continue to explore all things Metallica in LEGO form, I thought it would be fun to do an album cover. The Black Album seemed like it would be the easiest place to start, so I sat down to begin the prototype to determine what pieces I needed to buy. While building, I always have music playing and since Metallica’s newest album, 72 Seasons, had just arrived in the mail, I turned that on.
I immediately became so inspired, without any conscious thought, I instead began recreating the 72 Seasons artwork in LEGO.
On the first day I listened to the album in its entirety, twice. I got surprisingly far and what remained was small details that you think you’ll figure out quickly, but often don’t. Over the second and third days spent on the prototype, I listened to the album another three times.
I’m always asked how long it takes to make things, and I’m only able to estimate. For this, I can definitely say it took 6 hours, 3 minutes, and 20 seconds. This is the length of the album times 5, less the song Too Far Gone (times 5).
Why less Too Far Gone, you ask? Because there is something about Too Far Gone that inspires Dance Mode! I don’t know what it is, but I’ll readily admit every time it came on, I got up and had a Dance Party for 1!
This LEGO album is one 32x32 baseplate and about 4-studs deep with the different items projecting off. Total, it is 658 pieces.
Some of the album artwork is recreated 1:1, and some is only alluded to via LEGO pieces. Other parts of the artwork were either left off due to there not being a LEGO piece in black, or so that the final product didn’t appear too cluttered. In the end, some of the decisions felt like I was compromising with myself… but I’m very happy with the final product.
Why would this make a good set? Here are two reasons, LEGO and Lars Ulrich. Arguably Denmark's two most famous exports. The better question might be: How has this not happened yet? Both LEGO and Metallica fans are avid collectors, both fans come in all ages, and this is a fun set that everyone can enjoy.
The 72 Seasons album, and its accompanying No Repeat Weekend Concert Tour are proving to be wildly popular. My hope is that when Metallica fans look at this, the response is a smile, saying "I WANT ONE!" and they are inspired to vote.
