The Accordion

The accordion is a fantastic instrument, despite its reputation. You play it like a piano, squeeze it like a blacksmith, and carry it like a front-pack. Meanwhile, it sounds like an oboe, bassoon, clarinet, and violin rolled into one! Truly a remarkable musical creation.

This model uses the keyboard construction technique I developed for my piano and organ sets, and combines that with the complex geometry of the accordion. We're talking an angled keyboard, curved grill plate, staggered bass buttons, and a multi-jointed hand strap, among other features. Visually, the classic black and white bellows pattern contrasts nicely against the blue casing, a design found on some classic accordions.

It was a fun challenge to find ways to keep the LEGO studs moving in different directions around the piece, while maintaining a smooth surface, and staying faithful to the proportions and details of the real thing. Personally, I love the sound of an accordion, but if it's not your cup of tea, you'll at least like the way this LEGO one sounds... silent!
