Axolotl Antics

Axolotls may be common as pets (and in Minecraft!) but they are critically endangered in their natural habitat. They are native to only two lakes in the world: Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco, both near Mexico City.

These special salamanders can shift their hue a few shades lighter or darker as needed for camouflage, AND they can regenerate their limbs, lungs, heart, jaws, spines, and even parts of their brain! Skin, bone, cartilage, muscle, and stem cells can regenerate countless times and be completely functional.  

During the day, axolotls burrow into aquatic vegetation and mud. At night, they are animated, hungry and very active! Whether climbing on rocks, burrowing into vegetation or looking for snacks, axolotls always have a mischievous grin. 

About the build: This build has 404 pieces. I used hinges and ball joints to make the axolotls as flexible as possible. The head and tail can swivel at the joints, the mouth can open and close and the feet can be positioned to express their playfulness. The base of the build was designed to look like a sandy lakebed or aquarium. Hope you like it!
