Atlas: New York City

Welcome to my interpretation of sculptor, Lee Lawrie’s iconic Rockefeller Center Art Deco sculpture, Atlas.

aimed to showcase the original’s elegance and majesty as the Greek Titan is shown shouldering the Heavens above the hustle and bustle of the greatest city on Earth!

I tried to create the piece as close to life size (life size to a Minifig of course!) as possible - however as should be noted, I did take some liberties with the shaping of the figure, the sphere, the plinth and well just about everything... as I was going more for overall aesthetic representation as opposed to an exact replication. This was due mainly to the limits of the medium (bricks on hand) and/or my skills as a designer (you decide!) ;)

I wanted to honor this sculpture of Atlas because aside from being a fan of the sculpture (which is awesome; as in truly awe inspiring) and of the mythology (what a role model, holding up the whole world, right?) I wanted to build this because, as a New Yorker, Atlas holds a lot of nostalgic value for me, I remember the feeling of seeing the statue as a kid for the first time and how HUGE Mighty Atlas is and how small it made me feel by comparison. As an adult I now see how this sculpture helped shape my IMAGINATION, and so to me it is special, magical, mysterious and archetypal :)

I hope you enjoy!
