Hockey Goalie Mask
Goalies are amongst the bravest in sport. They are the last line of defence in a game where the season or championship is on the line. They hold a position that can win or lose a game based on their individual effort. Their position means they may take the heat for a loss when they do not bring their A-game, but they may also earn all the credit when they rob the favoured team of a victory. They go against human survival instinct and put themselves in front of 100 mile per hour, hard, frozen pucks. They are cut from a different cloth, and boldly face a task most would shy away from.
The unique mindset of a goalie often lends to a creative personality. Any true professional or aspiring goalie will personalize their equipment in some way that it is "theirs". This creativity is most evident in the goalie mask; an artist's canvas uncommon in any other sport. Besides their play on the ice, an elaborately customized helmet can set one goalie apart from the rest. I came up with the idea for the Lego Goalie Mask after painting my own goalie mask. In between coats of paint drying, I passed the time by building a Lego set. I then thought to myself, “Why shouldn’t these two creative tasks be combined?”. When I read further about Lego Ideas, I was excited to learn that it was possible for my idea to become an actual set. I knew I had to build it first, and then share my idea with hockey and Lego fans around the world!
I believe this would be a great set because the creative mindset of a goalie means most would love to add to their collection of trophies and past “armour” with a Lego goalie mask built on their own. And whether a goalie or not, any hockey fan will be excited to build a mask in the colour of their favourite team to add to their collection of sports memorabilia. Professional teams might even lend their logos and colour patterns to sticker sets. Aside from the possibility of colour options of both the mask and cage, the scale and detail of a monotone mask are still enough to impress and engage any hockey or Lego fan. The hollow design offers a challenge not seen in other "helmet" type sets.
The version I built is full scale and would be the most desirable version for hockey and Lego fans, but a smaller scale version could also be made as a separate more affordable option, or as a simpler build for younger customers. Not built in the first design, an optional buildable Lego stand might also be useful, although the current model sits perfectly well on a shelf or in a display case.
For legal reasons, it should be mentioned that despite being full-size and *carefully* wearable, the Lego goalie mask is not a protective piece of equipment and will not offer any protection from flying hockey pucks or other objects :) It is solely meant for building enjoyment and display purposes.
