This set depicts an archaeological excavation, complete with artifacts, a screen to capture artifacts trapped within the sediment, a total station to set up the unit and record artifact provenance, a camera to photograph artifacts both in situ (within the excavation unit) and after they have been excavated, excavation tools, a spray bottle to wet down the unit during excavation, a ladder to get in and out of the excavation unit, and a field station to catalogue artifacts before sending them off to the lab for analysis. The excavation unit itself has four distinct layers with Modern, Industrial, Medieval, and Bronze Age artifacts. Each layer can be removed, exposing artifacts from earlier time periods. Apart from exposing new artifacts, different soil horizons can be observed in the unit as the excavation progresses. The levels in the unit can also be compared to the exterior cross-section view of the soil horizons for easier viewing. There is even a charcoal layer for the archaeologists to sample and date using radiocarbon dating.
As an archaeologist, I built this set to teach my kids about archaeology and the scientific method. I believe that this would make a great Lego set as it demonstrates the scientific method in a fun way.
