Relive the eclipse. Recreate the battle. Restore the balance.
Welcome to the Fire Nation Royal Palace, one of the most iconic locations from the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender!
It's here in the Fire Nation Capital City that Team Avatar and allies from across the Four Nations invade on The Day of Black Sun. During the solar eclipse, the Firebenders' powers are temporarily snuffed out, giving our heroes a fair chance against Fire Lord Ozai's tyranny.
My LEGO IDEAS model of the Fire Nation Royal Palace includes:
- A full cast of 14 characters.
- Appa, Avatar Aang's sky bison.
- A removable façade, revealing the Fire Lord's Throne Room inside.
- A removable central tower, making the Throne Room easily accessible from above.
- A secret bunker for Fire Lord Ozai, perfect for recreating his confrontation with Prince Zuko at the height of the eclipse.
- A prison cell for Uncle Iroh with a function to collapse the bars—once he's built his strength up!
- A detailed recreation of exterior details, from the angled towers to the gold accents along the roof.

The Inspiration
Some of my most beloved LEGO memories are dumping out our bin of pieces and building while watching the latest Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes on Saturday mornings.
I was lucky enough to get the two original LEGO Avatar sets when they were new and have wanted more ever since!
When I saw Avatar: The Last Airbender In Concert last November, I knew I had to submit a design to LEGO IDEAS. I started with the question, "If this is my only shot at LEGO Avatar, how can I put the most into one set?"
A large cast of main characters was an immediate must-have, and of course Appa needed to be included, but I wanted to depict an exciting setting as well! The Day of Black Sun episodes comprise one of the most epic arcs of the entire series and it immediately came to mind as the perfect opportunity to maximize the LEGO IDEAS 5,000-piece limit.
The Sky Bison
After multiple Appa sets gained support on LEGO IDEAS, I knew he had to be included here. I debated whether to give him his full armor or his usual furry look. In the end, I went with his classic design—it’s more iconic and makes him easier to use in fan builds beyond this set.
I wanted to make sure all of Team Avatar could fit in his saddle, including Zuko, so that was the first thing I designed. While I knew it'd be hard to make six movable legs and still have a fairly compact model, I was able to make his lower jaw and tail have some motion.
Out of everything, I hope Appa lives up to the expectations of fans who've waited so long for him to be featured in an official LEGO set!
The Minifigures
This set brings together 14 key characters from The Day of Black Sun, capturing both sides of the dramatic invasion. Leading the charge are Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph and Chief Hakoda. On the defensive are Fire Lord Ozai, Princess Azula and three loyal Fire Nation soldiers.
While Mai and Ty Lee don’t appear in these specific episodes, they’re included to complete Azula’s iconic inner circle—rarely seen apart. Rounding out the lineup are Prince Zuko and a brawny Uncle Iroh.
Each minifigure features age-appropriate legs, following the precedent set by the Harry Potter LEGO theme. Their outfits are recreated as faithfully as possible using existing Studio elements.
Every minifig comes with at least one meaningful accessory. Highlights include Sokka’s black meteorite sword, a White Lotus tile for Iroh and a clear airbending sphere for Aang—built from Mysterio’s helmet piece.
Unfortunately, the 2006 mold for Momo isn’t available in Studio, but here’s hoping he gets a redesign if this set is selected!
