Rotary Dial Telephone

The Rotary Dial Telephone is an iconic piece of technology that revolutionized the way people communicated with one another. It became very common in homes and offices around the world and was a cornerstone in the development of the communication technology we use today.

 

I have created a brick-built Rotary Dial Telephone that closely resembles the original device. I tried to get the phone as close to the original scale as possible, so I bought a real dial phone to constantly look at for reference when building this model, incorporating every detail. I also made sure the model was as accurate to the original by adding the mechanism. The mechanism allows you to spin the dial with it making a sound effect (one way rotation mechanism), and then the dial will spin back when you let go (elastic). I settled on the light blue color because not only was it common for rotary phones, but the color worked perfectly when I put the build beside the LEGO Typewriter.

 

I built it because of its nostalgic value for me and my family. When I was younger, I would always notice the older phone at my great-grandparents' houses and was fascinated with them. The smooth spinning mechanism and the clicking noise as the dial spun back into the rest position always had me interested. Also, growing up in the “Telephone City” allowed my family and me to have visited Bell Homestead, only sparking further interest in the dial phone. I wanted to build it not only for my interest in the phones mechanism but because I knew many people would love this to be a set because of the memories it would have provided them.

 

I believe this would make an amazing LEGO set not only because so many people love the phone but also because having this as a set would allow new memories to be created and provide a way to remember classic memories.
