The Simpsons: Lard Lad Donuts

Dough!

Homer's running late for work but he still can't resist starting the day with one of his favourite sweet treats: a pink frosted donut with rainbow sprinkles from Springfield's finest purveyor of fried dough, Lard Lad Donuts! Lucky that's the only thing on the menu! Little does Homer expect to find his son already in there though... Bart's about to be sprung! Meanwhile, inside, Bart's finding it too hard to choose between the new range of milkshakes, so he orders all three flavours - it's the obvious solution!

Project Background

I thought it would be nice to bring another iconic location from Springfield to life; it may not be as iconic as The Simpsons' house, Kwik-E-Mart, Springfield Elementary or Krusty Burger, but Lard Lad Donuts is still famous enough to get its own real life incarnation at Universal Studios!

I worked from two picture references in creating this build - one was where the building is seen at night, yellow light shining out of the windows, and the other was of the same building is seen in daylight hours. Following suit, the pictures here show my model by day, and also by night, imagining what it could look like with LED lighting inside.

The Build

I've tried to incorporate a cartoon style into the build through the choice of colours and the pieces used for each detail - aiming to keep it simple, but not without plenty of interior detail. As far as I know, we never really see the inside of the store in the show so I've completely invented that, imagining it to have a checker board floor, vibrant lilac and coral colour scheme, a big pink clock in the shape of a donut and several tables and stools for patrons to sit at.

The build consists of two main parts - the donut store itself and of course, the Lard Lad Donuts mascot, who stands outside, proudly holding his giant pastry aloft!
This little dude was quite tricky to bring to life in LEGO with all the curves involved, but hopefully he bears a passing resemblance to the real deal!

The set is minifigure scale, to fit into LEGO Springfield and so you can incorporate minifigs for Homer and Bart and... who IS that guy behind the counter? He looks so familiar...
