Freight Train W/ Operating Cars

First, watch the short clip of the train in action, then read all about its features.

Have you ever wished you had a cargo train cruising through your layout, and with a simple push of a button, you could unload coal at the refinery, drop off barrels at the factory, and deliver mail to the station? If so, this train set would make the perfect addition to your layout.

This train is dedicated to my father, who has been into model trains my whole life. If you follow that scene, you will see that most of the big model train manufacturers have not produced any new action cars within the past 15 years. My father tells me the hobby of action trains is becoming too expensive, and some guys he knows have switched to collecting Lego trains due to the endless customizations. I got the idea of building action trains when my father made the comment that it was too bad Lego does not make realistic action trainsets that both kids and collectors could enjoy. Given all the positive responses I have received from my father and his friends, I hope I have accomplished just that.

Here are the details of my action train:

Diesel Engine: It is built on a 6x28 train base plate and equipped with a Powered UP Hub and Train Motor. This MOC is a detailed model of an EMD F40PH with a classic color scheme. The Hub is powered on by pressing a roof vent towards the front of the engine, and the power light for the Hub provides lighting to the engineer’s cabin. Both the cabin and train roof can be removed for easy access to the engineers cabin and Hub ports.

Coal Car: It is built on a 6x24 train base plate and equipped with a Powered UP Liner Motor. With a push of a button, you can retract one side of the floor, allowing the coal pieces to pass through the car and into the loading dock.

Barrel Car: It is built on a 6x24 train base plate and equipped with a Powered UP Liner Motor. With a push of a button, you can open the cargo door while simultaneously allowing the worker to swing out and unload a barrel into the loading dock. While the door is closing, a new barrel is automatically loaded onto the worker’s cart. This process can be repeated five times before needing to add more barrels. To add more barrels, simply remove a side panel and inset the barrels on their sides one at a time.

Mail Car: It is built on a 6x24 train base plate and equipped with a Powered UP Hub and Liner Motor. With a push of a button, you can open the cargo door while simultaneously allowing the worker to swing out and unload a stack of mail onto the loading dock. While the door is closing, a new stack of mail is automatically loaded onto the worker’s cart. This process can be repeated 5 times before needing to add more stacks of mail. To add more stacks of mail, simply remove a roof tile and insert the mail stacks into the slot one on top of the other. The Hub is powered on by simply removing a back roof tile, allowing access to the power button.

Thanks for checking out my design. Building functioning and realistic MOC train sets has been a hobby of mine for the past four years.

I hope you will support my project and share it with your friends!
