These are no soldiers or pirates, these are honest traders. They sail from port to port to exchange their goods. With a favourable there's no telling how far they will sail.
The sides of the ship are slightly slanted, to achieve the tumblehome shape of a real ship. A set of 4 swivel cannons are mounted on the sides, to provide some protection when dealing with pirates. The compass on the quarter deck actually does point North. The sails are real cloth and of excellent quality, they'll sail this ship wherever it needs to go.
