For movie lovers in Shanghai, cinemas are the most visited places in June every year, as the international movie festival opens its door.
Among all the cinemas involved, the Grand Theatre is my personal favourite. Hungarian architect L. E. Hudec designed its beautiful Art Deco facade in the 1930s. When night falls, the entire building is illuminated, and a magnificent event poster is featured. Trees rustle in the summer breeze. Crowds of people come and go. To me, this is the most glamorous scene of the movie festival.
I thus paint the scene with LEGO pieces, in the form of framed art. The canvas is 32 x 48 in studs. I use mostly wedge plates and rotated tiles to form a two-point perspective view. It is also the first time I ever tried to use color contrast or the negative spaces to present silhouettes of people passing by. With these approaches, I managed to keep the painting as flat as possible, so it looks considerably consistent from angles.
LEGO has a huge potential in interior decoration. I bring this work up here to demonstrate the possibilities of this particular form. If you would like to have it as an official LEGO set, please support my work. I’m more than grateful.
