Geisel Library, UCSD

== Overview ==

Geisel Library, designed by William Pereira, is the main library building of the University of California, San Diego. It is named in honor of Audrey and Theodor Seuss Geisel. Theodor is better known as children's author Dr. Seuss. The building's distinctive architecture, described as occupying "a fascinating nexus between brutalism and futurism", has resulted in its being featured in the UC San Diego logo and becoming the most recognizable building on campus. == Background ==

I studied in UCSD and loved the design of the library. The library has a bizarre look, but it’s full of character, unlike most other buildings we see in our daily lives. I enjoyed the time spent in that library so I decided to build this in Lego.

== Details ==

  • Number of bricks: 2,950
  • Dimension: 57.6x57.6x37.1 (cm) / 22.7x22.7x14.6 (inch)

This build consists of 6 levels (3rd to 8th), the rooftop, and the diagonal frames outside the building. The 1st and 2nd floors are not included in this build because they are sort of underground. Each of the floors from 5th to 8th can be split from the base, so that you can clearly see the details in every floor from 4th to 8th. The 3rd floor only has an outdoor area and doesn’t have an entrance (just like the real library). The 6th, 7th and 8th floors are fully furnished, while I left the 4th and 5th empty due to the constraint on the total number of bricks (<= 3,000).

The 6th to 8th floors contain bookshelves, group study tables, arm chairs, personal study desks and drawing desks. There’s a central core structure at the heart of the building. The core structure has similar configuration on all levels - a restroom, a water filling station, a group study room and a stairwell. The stairwell is fully functioning when you assemble the levels together.

Each level’s height is enough for minifigures to sit/stand. You probably already saw some minifigures hanging around in the building :)
