Sir Elton Hercules John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight (London, 25 March 1947), is a British singer-songwriter, composer and musician.

He is one of the greatest contemporary rock artists; with his intense musical activity he has in fact contributed greatly to the diffusion of the rock piano and in the seventies was the main expression of the movement, while boasting a production that ranges from symphonic rock to glam rock, pop rock, hard rock.

During his long career he has officially sold over 400 million records, making him one of the most successful singer-songwriters ever: as far as international record sales are concerned, he is the most successful British solo artist of all time and the fifth absolute. Furthermore, together with the author Bernie Taupin, he forms one of the most famous and prolific composers in the history of contemporary music, active almost continuously since 1967.

In 1994 he was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, while in 1998 he was made Knight (Knight Bachelor) by Queen Elizabeth II for services rendered to music, to English culture and to charity (his Elton John AIDS Foundation constitutes a of the main non-profit organizations in the world: it has so far collected over 150 million dollars used to support disease control programs in 55 countries around the world). In 1996, however, he was awarded the title of Commander of the Excellent Order of the British Empire.

In 1997 the Royal Academy of Music in London welcomed him as an honorary member. In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine placed him in 49th place on his list of the 100 best artists of all time; the same magazine placed it 38th on its list of the 100 best voices of all time. In 2008, Billboard magazine placed him in third place on a list with the names of the hundred most important Hot 100 artists, defining him as the most important solo male artist.

The musician became famous for songs such as Your Song, Rocket Man, Candle in the Wind (a song initially starring Marilyn Monroe and later dedicated to Lady Diana in 1997), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Crocodile Rock, Daniel, Tiny Dancer, Don 't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word and Sacrifice. Elton John holds the record for the best-selling single in history: Candle in the Wind 1997 / Something About the Way You Look Tonight sold over 40 million copies, and all the proceeds went to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
