Ballistae, were ancient missile weapons that could launched large projectiles at a great distance and it a target.
The earliest mention of ballista in literature occurs in the Bible, as invented and used under the reign of king Uzziah.
It was developed from earlier Greek weapons, it relied upon different mechanics, using two levers with torsion springs instead of a prod (the bow part of a modern crossbow). Early versions projected heavy darts or spherical stone projectiles.
This set portrays a medieval Ballista though in truth other siege weapons were more used at the time such as the catapult or the trebuchet.
